The posters in your room hint at the basic controls.

To talk to people and advance dialogues, press E
Press TAB to enable a cursor and interact with UI elements.

Holding the mousewheel lets you rotate items, scrolling while focusing an item brings it closer/farther, clicking it resets rotation.

If a character doesn't seem to want to talk, go dial 911 on a phone and come back to them. 

In case you've completed the demo once (this will be made obvious if you get there), you can press the non-numpad minus key (-) to trigger the visitors near instantly  (possibly buggy) and see what other choices are available even if the placeholder conversations aren't very complex atm.
